What are the different race categories?
The Creepy Mile (7:00 p.m.) is a 1-mile walk for families.
The 5K Run/Walk (7:45 p.m.) is open to all runners and walkers. Walkers will be asked to start at the back of the pack.
Can my child participate in the race by him or herself?
Children must be accompanied by an adult in the Creepy Mile.
Children ages 11 and under must be accompanied by a (registered) parent in the 5K. This is due to insurance requirements and we appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Parents please use discretion with children ages 12 and up.
What is the course like?
Trek or Treat is a trail race. Most of the running is done on crushed gravel and well-groomed paths. Our Collingwood race has more road sections. However, use caution as there are a few roots and bumps that keep things interesting! The course is easily manageable for those with strollers.

Do I need a light to participate?
Yes. The trails are dark! It is mandatory to carry a flashlight or to wear a headlamp to participate in the event. This is for your safety and the safety of others on the course.
Can I rent a headlamp?
Yes. We have a supply of headlamps that are available to rent at a cost of $10. Headlamps must be reserved in advance. This can be done online when registering for our event.
Is this a pet-friendly event?
Unfortunately, pets are not invited to this event.
Is this a stroller-friendly event?
Strollers are welcome in our Creepy Mile and 5K Run/Walk categories. If you are using your stroller in the 5K Run/Walk, please use common courtesy, such as maintaining a straight line ahead whenever possible and yielding to runners without strollers. Those with strollers will be asked to start at the back of the pack, ahead of the walkers.
Is there child-minding?
Child-minding by YMCA staff is available for children ages infant – 9 years of age on a reserved in advance basis for our Collingwood race only. Child-minding services will be available from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. during the 5K events so that parents can participate on their own. Parents/guardians will be required to sign the child in, provide details of any medical conditions/allergies and supply a peanut-free snack and drink. There is a limited number of child-minding spots available and you MUST RESERVE A SPOT by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. No spots will be available on race day, UNLESS RESERVED IN ADVANCE.
Is the event scary?
Don’t worry – there won’t be any zombies chasing you at this race! Trek or Treat is designed with families and runners in mind. Our displays are very kid-friendly, similar to what you might expect to see around your neighbourhood at Halloween.
Is this event chip-timed?
Yes. We offer professional chip timing.
What food is available at the event? Is this a peanut-free event for my allergic child?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a peanut-free event. While we distribute peanut-free candy at tables, there are third party food suppliers on site and items in the race kits that contain peanuts. Like any event, you should assume that food, surfaces and other people may have been in contact with allergens. Please use appropriate caution.
Gluten-free treat bags are available for children who can't consume wheat. Bags must be reserved by October 1, 2014 by emailing email@example.com. Please include your child's name and which race (Oakville or Collingwood) he or she will be attending. Your treat bag can be picked up at the regisration desk upon arrival.
At this event participants are provided with pizza, hot chocolate, and of course, loads of Halloween candy (over 9,000 pieces, in fact)! There are also food items included in our race kits (such as, Clif Bars).
Where can I get the sweet Trek or Treat shirt?
Racers may purchase a commemorative long-sleeved technical running shirt for $35 plus tax. Youth shirts are $20 plus tax. A limited supply of shirts is available for sale at the race.
Do I wear a costume to the race?
We love to see costumed participants! In fact, most of our racers dress up for the event. While dressing up is not mandatory, the vast majority of participants do don costumes.
Is there a charity associated with this event?
Yes. In 2014 our goal is to raise 1,000 pounds of food for food banks in our race communities (Oakville and Collingwood). Last year (2013) we raised 350 pounds of food in Collingwood and 872 pounds of food in Oakville. We invite you to help us reach this goal by bringing a non-perishable food item that can be dropped into our donation box.
In Oakville our donations will be going to the Oakville Fareshare Food Bank. Please refer to this list of most-needed items. They do not need: mac and cheese, beans and soup.
In Collingwood we are raising food donations in conjunction with Corus Feeds Kids for the Salvation Army.
